Curriculum Online eligibility rules
New eligibility rules published
After a six months notice period, changes to the eligibility rules for products on Curriculum Online come into force on 1 April 2007.
The revised rules document G002 Eligibility rules for Curriculum Online content v2.3 and a new associated document G002a Understanding the rules - guidance for content providers v2.3 will come into force on 1 April 2007 and will affect all products, both new and existing, on the Curriculum Online website.
The changes do not depart from the existing rules in any substantial way. Becta does not anticipate that any registration products will require removal but please note the stronger requirements for products to be designed for schools and linked to the curriculum, the SEN requirements and the additional clarity about free gifts.
Specific changes
The changes that have been made are as follows:
• Rule 1.1 Text has been added to prevent the supply of ineligible items as a 'free' gift or money-off offer conditional on the purchase of an eligible item.
• Rule 1.2 Text has been added to make it clear that products must be specifically designed for school use and must address particular curricular needs.
• Rule 1.4.2 An additional note in the associated guidance document clarifies the requirement for products targeted at Special Educational Needs to be specifically designed or modified for the intended end user. A new field allowing content providers to describe the accessibility of their products is planned for incorporation into the next version of the tagging tool and Curriculum Online search facility.
• Rule 1.4.3 An extra paragraph explains how providers should offer some support after supplying products.
• Rule 2.1 Learning Platforms and Virtual Learning Environments now appear as an addition to Managed Learning Environments to add clarity to the requirement.
• Rule 2.3 Additional text in the associated guidance explains how we decide if a product can be considered to be education specific.
Content Providers have until 1 April 2007 to ensure that their Products comply with the new guidance; if they do not they should be removed before this date; failure to remove an ineligible Product will constitute a breach of the agreed Terms and Conditions. Please note that it is the responsibility of the Content Provider to ensure that only compliant product records are uploaded.
If you are unsure about the eligibility of a product, please contact the helpdesk on 0845 054 0099 or by sending an email to help@curriculumonline.gov.uk.
